About me

My photography career shifted gears abruplty when I left my job as the one man photo staff at a daily newspaper in a small college town to take my first of many assignments for NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC Magazine. In twenty years as a freelance contract photographer to the NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC SOCIETY I have photographed a broad range of subjects throughout the American west and Pacific basin. I have traveled world wide on assignments for dozens of major U.S. and foriegn magazines and corporate clients.

The work and the people I meet is the best reward, but recognition is nice too. Early in my career the editors of AMERICAN PHOTOGRAPHER Magazine selected me for "The Best New Face in Magazine Photojournalism" award for their annual new talent competition. Later two of my NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC Magazine stories won top honors in separate "Pictures of the Year" annual photography competitions. My year long exploration of "Sagebrush Country" in the Great basin won the "Picture story of the year" award in the POY.

I bring a special skill to make people feel comfortable with the camera and a photojournalists perspective to create images with a dynamic use of light, color and design. I have solid location lighting skills and extensive experience in aerial photography.

My location in Bellingham, WA offers me easy access to Seattle, Vancouver, Canada and some of the most beautiful recreational and travel destinations in North America

My passions in life are my family, my photography, sailing, skiing and Labrador retrievers.
